# Already have an LMS? Run Quinn courses inside it

*SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, and cmi5 (xAPI)*

*Last reviewed September 28, 2026 by the Quinn implementation team*

**Can Quinn courses run inside our LMS?** Yes. Quinn exports compatible course types as SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, or cmi5 (xAPI) packages that you upload to any LMS that accepts those formats. The LMS records completion, pass or fail, and score. Live packages always show the latest published version, while self-contained packages keep everything in the file. Feature support depends on the package type and your LMS.

"We already have an LMS" is one of the most common things we hear. Usually the buyer isn't trying to get rid of that system. They're trying to improve what's in it: long slide decks, passive videos, and courses people complete without retaining much.

You don't need to replace your LMS to fix that. Build the course in Quinn, export it as a SCORM or cmi5 package, and upload it to your LMS like any other course. Learners launch it from the LMS, and the LMS records the result.

## At a glance

| | What it does | How it works |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Live package | Runs the hosted Quinn course from your LMS, always on the latest published version | SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, or cmi5 (xAPI), opened as a pop-out or played inside the LMS |
| Self-contained package (beta) | Puts the whole course, including media and voiceover, in one file | SCORM 1.2 only, with roleplays and scenarios read-only |
| Completion webhook | Sends completions from courses taken in Quinn to another system | A `course.completed` event your team routes, not native write-back |

## What you can export

From **Share & Export** on any course, Quinn exports a package for compatible course types in one of three formats:

- **SCORM 1.2:** as a live package or a self-contained package.
- **SCORM 2004:** 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Edition, as a live package.
- **cmi5 (xAPI):** for LMSs that support cmi5, as a live package. cmi5 packages always open as a pop-out.

Upload the file to any LMS that accepts that format. LMSs handle these standards a little differently, so exact feature support depends on the package type and your LMS.

## What your LMS records

- **Completion:** whether the learner finished the course.
- **Pass or fail:** measured against the course's passing threshold, which is 80% unless you change it in Quinn.
- **Score:** reported as a raw and a scaled score where the format supports both.

The passing threshold is written into the package in the field each format uses: `masteryscore` for SCORM 1.2, `minNormalizedMeasure` for SCORM 2004, and `masteryScore` for cmi5.

The course title and passing score are set when you export. To change either one, export and upload a new package.

## Live or self-contained: choosing a package

- **Live package (recommended):** A small file that loads the hosted Quinn course. Learners always get the latest published version, so when you publish an update in Quinn, it reaches your LMS without a re-upload. Available in SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, and cmi5. Choose **Pop-out Experience** to open the course in its own window, where voice and interactive features work normally. **Stay in LMS** plays inside the LMS window, with voice off, and isn't available for courses with scenario or roleplay blocks. cmi5 packages always open as a pop-out.
- **Self-contained package (beta):** Choose **Download self-contained package (Beta)** to put everything in the file, including media and pre-rendered voiceover. It's SCORM 1.2 only. Use it if your IT team requires fully self-contained content, or your LMS can't load content from outside. Roleplays and scenarios become read-only, and live features such as voice roleplay, AI chat, proctoring, and learner uploads aren't available offline. Interactive 3D blocks are bundled into the file. Because the course lives in the file, updates need a new export.

### What works in each package

| | Pop-out Experience | Stay in LMS | Self-contained (beta) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Formats | SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, cmi5 | SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 | SCORM 1.2 |
| Where it plays | Its own window, launched from the LMS | Inside the LMS window | Inside the LMS, from the file |
| Course updates | Latest published version, no re-upload | Latest published version, no re-upload | Export again to update |
| Voice | Works normally | Off | Pre-rendered voiceover only |
| Scenarios and roleplays | Work normally | Not available for courses with these blocks | Read-only |
| Needs the hosted Quinn course | Yes | Yes | No |
| Ask Quinn | Not included | Not included | Not included |

[Ask Quinn](/product/ask-quinn), which answers employee questions by text or phone call from your knowledge base, isn't part of any export.

## You own the courses

This matters most to teams that have been locked into a content library before. [You own your content](/data-security), and compatible courses can be exported at any time. Live packages depend on continued access to the hosted Quinn course; self-contained packages don't.

## How to export a course

1. In Quinn, check the course title and passing threshold. Both are fixed in the package when you export.
2. Open **Share & Export** on the course.
3. Pick the format your LMS accepts: SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 (2nd, 3rd, or 4th Edition), or cmi5 (xAPI).
4. For a live package, choose **Pop-out Experience** or **Stay in LMS**. For a self-contained SCORM 1.2 file, choose **Download self-contained package (Beta)**.
5. Upload the package to your LMS and assign it like any other course.

## When to use SCORM export and when to use Quinn

**Use SCORM export if…**

- HR requires every completion in one system of record
- You're under contract with your current LMS
- Your techs already log into the LMS regularly
- You only need a few high-impact courses

**Use Quinn's own delivery and tracking if…**

- You don't have an LMS, or your current one is mostly empty
- You want training links sent by text, with no app to install
- Your techs don't log into an LMS
- You want reporting beyond completion, pass or fail, and score

You can also start with a few courses inside your LMS and move more training into Quinn later.

## Sending completions from Quinn instead

If learners take courses in Quinn rather than in your LMS, Quinn can send a `course.completed` webhook each time a learner finishes a course. Your HRIS team or integration partner can route that event into your LMS or another system of record. Webhooks live under Settings → Developer → Webhook Endpoints once your Quinn team turns on developer settings for your account.

This is not the same as native, two-way write-back to your LMS.

## Common questions

### Which LMSs does this work with?

Any LMS that accepts SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, or cmi5. LMSs implement these formats a little differently, so upload a test package and check that completion, pass or fail, and score come through before you roll it out.

### Do learners get course updates without a re-upload?

With a live package, yes. It serves the latest published version of the course. The title and passing score stay as they were at export, so export again if you change those. Self-contained packages need a new export for any change.

### Can learners use Ask Quinn inside the LMS?

No. Ask Quinn isn't part of exported packages.
